AUSTIN, Texas – More than 60 students from The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work participated in Social Work Student Day at the Legislature on Tuesday, March 6. Clinical Associate Professor Barbara Anderson served as school liaison for the event sponsored by the Texas Association of Social Work Deans and Directors (TASWDD).
Students representing social work programs statewide attended a morning session held at the First Methodist Church of Austin that included a welcome from UT Austin School of Social Work Dean Luis H. Zayas, a legislative update from NASW-Texas, and a panel discussion with legislative advocates Sue Milam, Ph.D., Governmental Relations Director, NASW-Texas; Will Rainford, NASW-Texas Human Rights Committee, and Stacey Borasky, Ph.D, Chair, TASWDD.
Students later marched to the capitol steps where they and legislators spoke about issues concerning social workers and their clients in Texas. The afternoon was devoted to legislative visits.
