About the workshop: This learning opportunity reviews the history and research on the suicide attempts by adolescent Latinas and national surveys that report that Latinas have higher-than-average rates of suicide attempts. Zayas will discuss developmental issues of adolescence that bear on Latino youth and cultural and family systems factors that contribute to the suicide attempts. Attention will be given to how the girls describe the suicide attempts, why they attempt, and what meanings they gave to the attempts. Approaches to prevention and identification in schools and to family-centered treatments will be discussed.
About the presenter: Luis H. Zayas, Ph.D., is Dean and Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy at the School of Social Work of The University of Texas at Austin. He has devoted his career as a clinician, teacher, and researcher to child and adolescent development and family functioning. His research on the suicide attempts of young Latinas resulted in the book Latinas Attempting Suicide: When Culture, Families, and Daughters Collide (Oxford, 2011). Most recently, he has authored Forgotten Citizens. Deportation, Children, and the Making of American Exiles and Orphans (Oxford University Press, 2015).
