AUSTIN, Texas – School of Social Work students at The University of Texas at Austin will host a screening of “Art From the Streets” Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the school’s UTOPIA Theatre, 1925 San Jacinto Blvd. Admission is free and parking is available at the university’s Trinity Garage.
“Art From the Streets” is a feature-length documentary that tracks the lives of five homeless artists and how Art From the Streets, a grassroots arts program started in Austin in 1991, has provided them with courage, hope, and money from the sale of their art. The film won the Best Documentary award at the 2011 American Artist Film Festival.
A Q&A session with the film’s director, Layton Blaylock, will immediately follow the screening.
Students enrolled in Dynamics of Organizations and Communities, a class taught by Professor Calvin L. Streeter, and students who serve as Dean’s Ambassadors, a select group of volunteers, have organized the screening as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week: Listen. Learn. Lend a Hand, a week of events (Nov. 10-18) designed to educate the Austin community on the root causes of hunger and homelessness in Central Texas.
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual, national observance co-sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger & Homelessness.
