Feb. 24: Institute Sponsors Lecture by Visiting Scholar Dr. Susan Cadell, Wilfrid Laurier University

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work Visiting Scholar Susan Cadell, Ph.D., MSW, will present a lecture entitled “Parents Caring for a Child with a Life-Limiting Illness: Implications for Social Workers and Other Pediatric Palliative Professionals” Friday, February 24, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the school’s UTOPIA Theatre. The lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Grief, Loss, and Family Survival, a unit of the school’s Center for Social Work Research.

Dr. Cadell is an associate professor and director of the Manulife Centre for Healthy Living in the Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Cadell’s research concerns positive aspects of stress and coping in various health situations, particularly posttraumatic growth. She is a member of several multidisciplinary research teams in pediatric palliative care. Her current research includes posttraumatic growth in parents caring for a child with a life-limiting illness, couples coping with caregiving together as well as undertaking an exploration of family bereavement over time when a child dies.

Cadell is also a member of a team working to increase social work education in palliative care through the development of social work competencies.
