Practice Sequence

Students 6BSW students who have completed the the foundation sequence may apply to the social work practice sequence. The Steve Hicks School of Social Work considers students for admission to practice sequence twice a year, during the fall and spring semesters. Application requirements include:

    • Minimum UT Austin GPA of 2.0
    • Minimum 2.5 GPA in social work prerequisite or equivalent courses
    • 45 semester-hours of coursework
    • Completion of ALL of the following courses with a “C” or higher:
      • SW 310: Intro to Social Work and Social Welfare Practice
      • SW 312: Generalist Social Work Practice
      • SW 313: Social Work Research Methods (or approved substitute)
      • SW 318: Social Work Statistics (or approved substitute)
      • SW 325: Foundations of Social Justice
      • Current enrollment in courses during time of application is permitted. Grades will be checked at the end of the semester.
    • Must view online resumé workshop here
    • Submission of current resumé
      • Resumés should include at least one service-learning experience.  
    • S W 312 Instructor’s Student Performance Evaluation
      • At the middle of the semester, S W 312 instructors will complete student performance evaluations for all students planning to apply to practice sequence and rank the following:
        • Student’s engagement skills appropriate for this level of their education
        • Student’s ability to work cooperatively within a group
        • Student’s ability to accept feedback
    • Emotional and professional readiness to work with clients
    • A personal statement

Please note that these are the minimum application requirements, and thus meeting them does not guarantee admission to the major.
