
Admission to the PhD degree program is competitive and early application is encouraged. Application requires admission to both The University of Texas at Austin Graduate School and the Steve Hicks School of Social Work.
Applicants are reviewed and evaluated on the basis of their applicant file, which includes:
- Records of academic work, including transcript showing statistics course with grade of “B” or higher
- Personal narrative statement
- Writing sample or publication
- Current resume
- 3-5 letters of recommendation
- International applicants from countries with primary language other than English: Official copy of TOEFL and TSE scores, or TOEFL-iBT score.

How to Apply
- Obtain an university electronic ID (EID). This EID will allow you to access the required online application.
- Complete the online application
- See a checklist of required materials (PDF)
- Upload the following materials:
- Personal narrative statement (instructions and prompt available in the online application)
- One copy of publication or other written documents that are representative of academic or professional work
- 3 to 5 letters of reference, submitted electronically by the writer of the reference
- Current resume
- Non-refundable application fee: $65 for U.S. citizens or permanent residents; $90 for international applicants
- Official transcripts See instructions for uploading transcripts here (PDF)
- International applicant only: completed certification of financial responsibility form
- You will need to request the following documentation to be sent electronically to the Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC):
- Official copy of GRE score from ETS. When taking the test, have your score sent to The University of Texas at Austin (code 6882). If you have already taken the test, call ETS at 1-888-GRE-SCORE and request your score to be sent to GIAC. Please note: ETS will not report GRE scores older than 5 years. Only test scores mailed directly from the testing agency are considered official.
- International applicant whose first language is not English: Official copy of TOEFL and TSE scores, or TOEFL-iBT score. Please note: TOEFL scores older than 2 years will not be accepted. Only test scores mailed directly from the testing agency are considered official.
Priority Deadline: December 15
The Admission Committee begins the review of applications at that time and continues until the incoming cohort is full. The school is not obligated to review applicant files that are not complete by the priority deadline. Learn more about the review process here.
